Protecting the many passive crossings is a necessity to offer passers reduced risk crossing the railway. In addition, a protected crossing can often result in a higher line speed and higher capacity to run trains faster and more often.
However, the cost related to installing protection for the many thousands of crossings is in sum vast. A conventional system installation could run in the millions of pounds. Increased maintenance and train interruption once a system installed fails also weighs heavily on infrastructure budgets.
Wavetrain offers a CENELEC SIL2 certified, and UK type approved (PA05/06636) system capable of protecting footpaths and bridleways. It is combined with approved lights and sounders comprising a complete system for protecting level crossings. Since the system only has a maximum of forty meters of cabling between sensors at the crossing and a control unit, installation is done in hours not days, weeks or even months. System calibration for required warning time is done onsite and can actually be changed if the need arises for a change in line speed. This endeavour would be an impossible cost for conventional systems.
Years of testing has verified the miniscule maintenance requirement. No moving parts and a secure sensor clamped to the rail sustaining ERTMS standards for vibration has proven a very low maintenance requirement. No specialist training is necessary to install or maintain the system. Wavetrain offers unique competence to calibrate in place or even remote support for adjustments of warning time when required.
The Wavetrain offer obviously reduces the insurmountable cost conventional LX protection entails.
